George on the Green |
The name Holyport is from the Anglo-Saxon and appears as Horipord in 1220. Roughly translated it means ‘muddy market town’. This unglamorous description was changed later to Holyport. The George is a 16th Century Inn and until the 80’s this 450 year-old Pub was also a venue for the village butchers. Cricket was played on the green until the late 60’s, but due to increased vehicles passing through (and too many sixes) traffic stopped play officially. During the reign of Charles II (1649-85), his mistress Nell Gwyn lived in Holyport. |
